‘Darkest day’, tweeted former Jammu and Kashmir chiefminister Mehbooba Mufti minutes after Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday moved aresolution in Rajya Sabha to abrogate Article 370 of the Constitution thatextends special status to Jammu and Kashmir.
“Today marks the darkest day in Indian democracy. Decisionof J&K leadership to reject 2 nation theory in 1947 & align with Indiahas backfired. Unilateral decision of GOI to scrap Article 370 is illegal &unconstitutional which will make India an occupational force in J&K,” the PeopleDemocratic Party leader said. Sounding a note of caution Mufti tweeted: “Itwill have catastrophic consequences for the subcontinent. GOIs intentions areclear. They want the territory of J&K by terrorising it’s people. India hasfailed Kashmir in keeping its promises.”
The moving of resolution in Parliament followed intensespeculation for the past two weeks about a ‘big decision’ on Kashmir. A fewdays back all tourists and pilgrims at the ongoing Amarnath yatra were told toleave the Valley.On Monday, morning internet was snapped, restriction sput onleaders and schools were shut.
Regional parties in Jammu and Kashmir have called attemptsto abrogate Article 370 an aggression against the people of Jammu, Kashmir andLadakh.
Home Minister Amit Shah said he would also speak about thesituation in Kashmir which has been put under a security lockdown by theadministration. Movement of several political leaders such as former chiefministers Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti have been restricted by theadministration which has also severely curtailed movement of public.
The government, which listed four bills and legislativeproposals before the Rajya Sabha, intends to get the resolution passed by theend of day.
