A fierce encounter ensued between militants and security forces during a Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) in the central Kashmir district of Badgam on Wednesday evening, official sources said.

They said troops of Rashtriya Rifles (RR), Special Operation Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir police and CRPF on a tip off about the presence of militants launched a CASO in Chandoora area of Badgam district.

However, when the security forces were sealing the area and moving towards a particular house, militants hiding there opened fire with automatic weapons. Security forces also retaliated ensuing in an encounter. Two militants are believed to have been trapped in the area, they said adding the operation was going on when the reports last came in.

Meanwhile, additional security forces and police have been deployed in the adjacent areas to prevent any demonstration.
