First case under the newly enacted Triple Talaq Law was registered, where a man from Uttar Pradesh's Mathura gave instant divorce to his wife in the middle of the road for refusing to arrange dowryamount of Rs 1 lakh, reported.On the basis of a complaint by the victim'smother, a case was registered under section 4 of the Muslim Women (Protectionfor Rights on Marriage) Act, 2019.On Thursday when the couple met forreconciliation, Ikram demanded Rs 1 lakh to continue in the marriage withJumirat.When she refused to pull money for the dowry, Ikram pronounced"Talaq-Talaq-Talaq" and walked away according to the complaint by themother of the victim.
Mathura Senior Superintendent of Police Shalabh Mathur saida case under the new Triple Talaq Act was registered.On Thursday, President RamNath Kovind gave his assent to the Triple Talaq Bill, which criminalisesinstant 'triple talaq' among Muslims and attracts a jail term of three years forthe husband.On July 30, the Central government had scored a major victory inthe Rajya Sabha on the back of cracks in the Opposition when the House passedthe Triple Talaq Bill after rejecting the Opposition's demand to refer the Billto the Select Committee.
The Bill was passed with 99 members in its favour while 84members voted against it in the final division.In the division on referring theBill to the Select Committee, the government got 100 votes while 84 votedagainst it.
The BJP led NDA government, which does not have a majorityin the Upper House, managed to smooth-sail for the contentious Bill becauseparties like AIADMK, which has 11 members and JDU, with six, walked out afterrecording their opposition to the Bill. The BJD had supported the Bill.
At least five members of the Congress, some from TrinamoolCongress, SP, BSP and others belonging to parties like BSP, YSRCP, and TRSreportedly abstained from voting. NCP's Sharad Pawar and Praful Patel andJharna Das Baidya of CPI(M) were also absent.
