Prime Minister Narendra Modi, addressing the UN GeneralAssembly today, said the world needs to unite and have a consensus on fightingterrorism, which, he said was one of the biggest challenges before humanity."We believe that terrorism is not a challenge for any one country but forall countries and for humanity. For the sake of humanity, the world has tounite against terror," PM Modi said in his address.

Without naming Pakistan, PM Modi said there needed to bemore anger globally about what terrorism was doing to humanity. "We belongto a country that has given the world Buddh (Buddha's message of peace), not'Yuddh' (war). When we raise our voice against terror, it is with seriousnessand anger," said the Prime Minister in a 20-minute speech in which he alsospoke about India's fight against global warming and its developmentinitiatives.

A divided world, PM Modi said, was in nobody's interest."Neither do we have an option to restrict ourselves to our borders.Multilateralism is the essence, we need give a new direction," he said.

"Swami Vivekananada had given the message of harmonyand peace to the Parliament of Religions, and not dissension. The world'sbiggest democracy still has the same message for the world -- harmony andpeace," he said.

During his week-long US visit, the Prime Minister has, without once making a direct reference to Pakistan, made it clear that thecountry is the epicenter of terror and needs to act against terroristsoperating from its soil.

On Thursday, the US said any easing of tensions betweenIndia and Pakistan is contingent on Islamabad taking action against those whoengaged in cross-border infiltration.

"I think what we would like to see are the conditionswhereby India and Pakistan can have a constructive conversation that leads toan improvement of relations between the two nuclear powers," said AliceWells, US Acting Assistant Secretary for South and Central Asia.

"And obviously, that is going to hinge off ofcounterterrorism, off of Pakistan's seriousness of effort in ensuring thatgroups don't take advantage and engage in cross-border infiltration, that thereare serious steps to implement the Financial Action Task Force action plan thatPakistan has committed to, and which includes the prosecution of UN-designatedterrorists. So whether it's Hafiz Saeed who currently is in custody and underprosecution, but also leaders of Jaish-e-Mohammed, like Masood Azhar, who longhave been able to exploit their presence on Pakistani soil," she said.

On the sidelines of the UN meet, PM Modi has held meetingswith US President Donald Trump and many other world leaders including GermanChancellor Angela Merkel.
