India, on Friday, reported the highest single-day spike of 10,956 new COVID-19 cases. The total number of cases in the country now stands at 2,97,535, including 1,41,842 active cases, published,47,195 cured/ discharged/ migrated cases and 8,498 deaths, the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said.
Maharashtra continues to top the chart with the highest number of coronavirus cases in the country. As of Friday morning, the state recorded 97,648 cases of coronavirus. While 47,980 of these are active, over 46,000 people have been released/ cured so far. The death toll in the state stands at 3,590. In Mumbai, there are a total of 2,028 COVID19 positive cases in Mumbai Police and a total of 82 in the State Reserve Police Force.
Delhi with over 20,000 active cases and Tamil Nadu, with 17,662 cases are the other severely-hit states.
Meanwhile, a surveillance study conducted by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has revealed that only 0.73 per cent of the population included in the survey showed evidence of past exposure to COVID-19.
The study was conducted in 83 districts covering 28,595 households and 26,400 individuals. According to the ICMR survey, the risk of COVID-19 spread is 1.09 times higher in urban areas and 1.89 times higher in urban slums. The mortality rate of the disease is very low at 0.08 per cent.
