The J&K Lieutenant Governor, GC Murmu is the new Chancellor of Kashmir and Jammu Universities.

An order in this regard was issued by the General Administration Department (GAD) on Wednesday. The order states that any reference in the Principal Act to the words “Governor of Jammu and Kashmir” shall be constructed as reference to the Lieutenant Governor of the Union Territory (UT) of Jammu and Kashmir.”

In the Kashmir and Jammu Universities Act 1969, there is a reference to the Governor of erstwhile state of J&K. After the enactment of J&K Re-organisation Act 2019, the state of J&K has been reorganized into Union Territory of J&K and Union territory of Ladakh,” reads the GAD order.

The order for appointment of Lieutenant Governor was issued seven months after the Government of India abrogated Article 370. All the Universities in J&K were without Chancellor.

Meanwhile, the government has stated that the order issued for appointment of Chancellor may be called as Jammu and Kashmir Universities (removal of difficulties) order 2020.

It shall come into effect with the immediate effect,” reads the order.
