"Several MPs have asked how long will J&K remain a Union Territory- I want to assure them when the situation gets normal and the right time comes, we are ready to make J&K a state again. It may take a little longer, but it will become a state once again, one day" Amit Shah said. The Rajya sabha has now passed the bill.

The home minister also defended the government's decision to revoke special status given to Jammu and Kashmir under Article 370 via presidential order.

The home minister argued that Article 370 was the cause of lack of development, corruption and terrorism in the region. He claimed the government will make Jammu and Kashmir the most developed region within five years after it becomes a Union Territory.
