Jammu: Liquor shops are closed during the lockdown to defeat the Corona virus, due to which drug smugglers are selling liquor illegally at high prices to people in Jammu. The Jammu Police has claimed to have busted one such liquor smuggling gang.
In the Domana sub division of Jammu, the drug dealers who were caught by the police took advantage of the lockdown and smuggled liquor illegally in Jammu and sold it in Jammu at expensive prices.
According to Kaushin Kaul, SDPO of Domana Sub Division, in the current lockdown, there is a strict order of the government not to open liquor shops, due to which the supply of liquor in Jammu is closed but the demand for it has increased. He said that smugglers are taking advantage of this huge difference between the supply and demand of liquor and a bottle of Rs 400 is being sold for Rs 2300.
According to Kaushin Kaul, on Tuesday, information came to the Domana police that some people were illegally carrying liquor in a private I-20 car. Information came to the police that Surjit Singh, a prominent smuggler of the area, is bringing a large consignment of liquor with some of his colleagues. He told that Jammu police had laid a trap to break this illegal link of alcohol, in which this criminal got trapped.
SDPO said that as soon as the police team tried to stop it, the accused broke away the barrier of the police and after which he was caught on the chase. Police found 11 boxes of liquor from this vehicle containing around 131 English liquor bottles, which it was bringing for sale in the area.
