The Government has appointed Lt General Upendra Dwivedi, PVSM, AVSM as the next Chief of the Army Staff (CoAS) of the Indian Army. Currently serving as the Vice Chief of the Army Staff, Lt General Dwivedi will assume his new role on the afternoon of June 30, 2024, following the retirement of the present Chief of Army Staff, General Manoj C Pande, PVSM, AVSM, VSM.

Lt General Dwivedi was born on July 1, 1964, and commissioned into the Infantry (Jammu & Kashmir Rifles) of the Indian Army on December 15, 1984. Over his nearly 40-year career, he has served in a variety of command, staff, instructional, and foreign appointments. His command appointments include commanding the Regiment of 18 Jammu & Kashmir Rifles, Brigade 26 Sector Assam Rifles, and DIG of Assam Rifles (East). He has also served as GOC 9 Corps.

As a Lt General, he has held significant positions such as Director General Infantry and General Officer Commanding in Chief of the Headquarters Northern Command from 2022 to 2024. He was appointed as Vice Chief of the Army Staff thereafter.

Lt General Dwivedi is an alumnus of Sainik School Rewa, National Defence College, and Army War College. He has completed additional courses at DSSC Wellington and Army War College, Mhow. He was conferred the title of 'Distinguished Fellow' at the NDC equivalent course at USAWC, Carlisle, USA. Additionally, he holds an MPhil in Defence & Management Studies and two Master’s Degrees in Strategic Studies and Military Science.

In recognition of his service, Lt General Dwivedi has been decorated with the Param Vishisht Seva Medal (PVSM), Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM), and three GOC-in-C Commendation Cards.
