A senior Congress leader accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Parliament of being silent on the issue of crimes against women.

Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, the Congress's leader in the LokSabha, said that from Make In India -- a government initiative to boost manufacturing -- the country was heading towards "rape in India". The issue of sexual crimes against women is back at the centre of the national conversation partly due to the horrific gang rape and murder of a Telanagana woman, and the subsequent killing of the four suspects in what the police said was an encounter. The police action had its critics, but it was largely welcomed by the public. A number of senior politicians, too, lauded the move.

On Friday -- the day the suspects were killed -- a rapevictim from Unnao, Uttar Pradesh, died of burns she suffered when five men, inclding her allegest rapists, set her ablaze when she was on her way to a court hearing. At the time, the accused were out on bail.
