An earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter Scale hit Amritsar in Punjab on late Friday night. Strong tremors could be felt across north India in states Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, the Delhi-NCR and Uttarakhand.

As per the National Centre for Seismology under the Union Ministry of Earth Sciences, the epicentre of the earthquake was in Amritsar.

The earthquake occurred at 10.34 pm at 31.57 N latitude and 75.09 E longitude. The ministry added that the earthquake had a depth of 10 Km.
