Seven labourers including six from district Udhampur and one from Ramban, were killed and at least 30 others injured when a roof of an under construction building collapsed in Meerut area of Uttar Pradesh.
Reports said that these people belonging to poor families from remote Badhota area of Pancheri, one from Ramnagar in district Udhampur and another from Sumbarh village in Ramban were working as labourers at the under construction cold storage building at Daurala near Meerut in Uttar Pradesh.
The building suddenly collapsed this evening and at least 30 workers were trapped under it. The NDRF and Police teams from Meerut rushed to the spot and launched rescue operation using JCBs and other heavy machines.
The trapped injured persons were rescued while the dead bodies of seven persons were also retrieved from the debris.
All the deceased persons belonged to Jammu and Kashmir. Nine others from this area are said to be injured.
The deceased were identified as - Baldev Singh, son of Rumal Singh from Badhota village in remote Landhar area of Pancheri¸ Balbir Singh, son of Bansi Lal and Satpal, son of Jagat Ram, both residents of Badhota in Pancheri; Kalu Ram, son of Kichu, resident of Pancheri; Ramesh Kumar, son of Prem Lal from Lalli village in Udhampur; Balwant Raj, son of Sharan Das, resident of Ramnagar in district Udhampur and Hoshiyar Singh, resident of Sumbarh village in Ramban.
Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh, who happens to be the Member Parliament from Kathua-Udhampur-Doda-Ramban-Kishtwar area told Excelsior News Jammu that immediately after coming to know about the unfortunate incident, he spoke to Deputy Commissioner, Meerut, Deepak Meena and took stock of the situation.
Dr Singh said he told DC to provide all possible assistance to the injured persons and make prompt arrangements for shifting dead bodies of the poor workers from his constituency to their respective villages. Dr Singh said he also spoke to Divisional Commissioner Jammu, Ramesh Kumar and District Administration Udhampur and asked officers to coordinate with the Meerut District Administration and assist the bereaved families. He expressed grief over the tragic death of seven people of his constituency and assured all possible assistance to the bereaved families.
