Much of the focus since Article 370 was revoked and theproposal for bifurcation of Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories hascentred on the Valley, its people and what the future holds. A key part of thedevelopments from Monday was also that Ladakh finally emerges from the shadows.BJP MP Jamyang Tsering Namgyal from Ladakh has found it tough to contain hissmile since Home Minister Amit Shah's announcement on Monday, and he hasreasons galore to maintain that smile.
On Tuesday, Namgyal highlighted just what making Ladakh intoa separate Union Territory would mean for the region and its people. "UPAgave Kashmir a Central University in 2011. Jammu fought and took a CentralUniversity. I was a Student Union leader. We demanded a Central University inLadakh, but we didn't get any," he said. "PM Modi ji recently gave usa university. 'Modi Hai to Mumkin Hai'."
Highlighting how revoking Article 370 is a historic as wellas a bold decision, Namgyal further said that people of Ladakh, as well asJammu and Kashmir, can truly prosper now. "What will be lost with thisdecision? Sirf do pariwar rozi-roti khoyenge (Only two families will lose theirlivelihood). The future of Kashmir is all set to get bright," he said.
While the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Bill proposesmaking Jammu and Kashmir a UT with legislature, Ladakh would be a UT without alegislature. Shah had said that the people of Ladakh had long demanded thestatus of UT to fulfil their aspirations. Namgyal had earlier said that Article370 had choked the development of Ladakh and strangulated the identity of thepeople there. He had also countered claims by rival parties that people inLadakh and Kargil were not happy with the Centre's decisions. "People arerejoicing back home," Namgyal had said.
