Virat Kohli continued his love story with breaking records as he achieved a notable feat during the IPL 2024 opener between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in Chepauk on Friday. When Kohli got to six runs on Friday, the former RCB skipper became the first-ever Indian to score 12,000 runs in T20 cricket.
Kohli, who got to the milestone in 377 innings, is currently in sixth place as far as top run-getters in T20s is concerned. Chris Gayle (14,562 runs), Shoaib Malik, Kieron Pollard, Alex Hales and David Warner are the top five reading run-scorers in T20s. Kohli also became the second-fastest to 12,000 runs, after Chris Gayle got to it in 353 innings.
Should Kohli get to a half-century, he will also get the chance to become the first Indian to register 100 50-plus scores in T20s. So far, Chris Gayle (110) and David Warner (109) are the only ones above him.
In IPL 2023, Kohli finished with 639 runs at a strike-rate of 139.82 and an average of 53.25. Kohli finished the season last year with two centuries and six fifties. RCB, however, failed to make it to the playoffs after they finished sixth in the points table with 14 points.
Kohli is also the highest all-time run scorer in the IPL, having amassed 7274 runs from 238 matches, including seven centuries and 50 half-centuries.
At the time of writing this report, RCB, who won the toss against CSK and opted to bat, were 63/3 in nine overs, with Virat Kohli (11*) and Cameron Green (14*) unbeaten. For CSK, this is Ruturaj Gaikwad’s first match as the team’s captain after being handed over captaincy responsibilities from MS Dhoni.
