Jammu, June 30, 2020: Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Narayana Super speciality Hospital achieved another milestone by performing a complex surgery called Inferior Vena Cava Filter (IVCF) implant surgery and saving the life of 80 years old.
Hailing from Jammu, Mrs Banso Devi was admitted at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Narayana Super speciality Hospital owing to leg swelling and shortness of breath. On detailed evaluation by the doctor and team, it was found that she was suffering from left lower limb Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT). Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) occurs when a blood clot forms in one or more of the deep veins in one’s body. It is usually seen in legs and can cause excessive leg pain or swelling. In the case of Mrs Banso Devi, she was having a blood clot in her body’s main vein, which runs through the belly and carries blood from the lower half of the body back to the heart called the Inferior Vena Cava (IVC). Diagnosis also revealed that the blood clot had moved towards the lungs. As any further delay in treatment would have blocked the blood vessel of the lung and would have cost the lady her life, the doctor and team suggested an Inferior Vena Cava Filter (IVCF) implant surgery.
Explaining about the procedure, Dr. Nikhil Mahajan (Consultant Cardiologist) said that, “The patient was very critical, in fact, her clot was moving towards the lungs. Further, owing to the repeated use of blood thinners the patient had also developed bleeding leaving us to perform IVC filter implant surgery. In this procedure an IVC filter, a small metal device that can stop blood clots in leg veins from moving towards heart and it was implanted into the patient. Generally, blood from the lower half of your body must pass through the filter to reach heart and lungs. IVC Filter traps blood clots before they cause a pulmonary embolism. The procedure is a high risk surgery, however owing to the availability of state-of-the-art facility and expert team, the surgery was successful.”
Dr Rakesh Sahini (Medical Suprintendant) at the Hospital said, "IVC filter implant surgery is a complex surgery. In fact, the risk level is very high. But the team due to their expertise were able to perform it successfully.”
The IVC filter implant surgery is the rare IVC surgery performed by Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Narayana Super speciality Hospital, making it one of the few hospitals in the region to have conducted so many such complex surgeries.
