Former Indian Army officers have condemned comments made by a tourist in a viral video recorded in Minamarg, Ladakh. The footage shows a woman confronting security personnel at a barricade, questioning why tourists were being stopped, and comparing the restrictions to those in Kashmir. She is heard stating, “We are Gen Z, we’ll not tolerate this nonsense.”
Mizoram Governor and former Army Chief General VK Singh (Retd) criticised the remarks on August 20, emphasising that soldiers guarding the nation should not be unfairly blamed or disrespected amid the “Gen Z” rhetoric. Posting on X, he wrote, “India’s armed forces stand between our nation and those who seek to harm it. The Minamarg incident is a stark reminder of the courage, sacrifice and vigilance of our soldiers. Whatever the circumstances, unfairly blaming or disrespecting our soldiers is wrong. Criticism should be based on facts, not emotion or sweeping accusations. We stand with those who serve and sacrifice for India.”
Lieutenant General KJS Dhillon (Retd), former Chinar Corps Commander, also defended the soldiers in a post on X, stating, “My dear lady, Soldiers pay their taxes in advance, even before they get their pay. You can go for vacation to such areas because our soldiers are guarding it day and night, even at the cost of their lives. Your Language is the reflection of good parenting & schooling. Be respectful always. Learn to be a good law abiding citizen before asking for entitlement.” He concluded with, “And lastly …. ‘Get Well Soon’ Jai Hind.”
Another former Chinar Corps Commander, Lieutenant General Satish Dua (Retd), criticised the tourist’s comments as a degradation of soldiers’ sacrifice. He pointed out that “Army salaries are paid from our taxes,” noting the security sensitivities of Ladakh as a border area. He said, “Army personnel also pay taxes.”
On August 19, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah addressed the growing use of “Gen Z” as a threat in response to perceived grievances, warning that such rhetoric could damage the positive perception of the younger generation. He wrote on social media, “This ‘we are Gen Z’ has become the new ‘jaantay nahin ho mera baap kaun hai.’ Using the identity of a generation as a threat whenever someone feels slighted is counterproductive and could damage the positive perception of Gen Z. The quickest way to erode any Gen Z goodwill is to start using it as a threat at the slightest perceived affront.”
Minamarg is located along the Srinagar-Leh highway near Zoji La in Kargil district, Ladakh, where security checkpoints are common. The Zoji La stretch is known for narrow roads, rockfalls, landslides and sudden weather changes, with traffic sometimes regulated through controlled movement windows depending on conditions.
