The US Senate and House have turned blue as Democrats flipped dozens of key Republican states in a massive vote of no confidence in President Donald Trump and his policies. The blue wave spread countrywide, even penetrating into states that have historically been red. Kansas, Texas and South Carolina, which have not elected Democratic senators for several decades, swung.
Pastor Adam Hamilton secured an upset victory for the Democrats in Kansas by defeating Roger Marshall, a first for them in 94 years. Iowa, Ohio, Maine, and North Carolina were the other states that voted blue. Meanwhile, Democrats won more than 220 seats in the House, flipping over two dozen states.
Skyrocketing living costs, Trump's dropping approval ratings and the Iran war caused big dents for the Republican Party and the US President. The loss would pave the way for Democrats to make Trump's last two years of presidency agonising. They could block the 80-year-old's legislative plans, hold hearings, issue summons and order investigations. However, it would not be that easy because of Trump's veto power and Senate filibuster, a tactic to delay or block a vote by preventing debate on a bill, thereby allowing minority senators to stop most legislation.
Here are top 10 developments of the US midterm elections 2026:
Democrats registered the party's first stunning victory with a flip in North Carolina in both the Senate and House. Democrat Jamie Ager won the House seat after the retirement of Republican Chuck Edwards, while Roy Cooper defeated Michael Whatley in the Senate. This is the first time since 2008 that Democrats have won the Senate seat in the state.
Democrats also flipped the New Jersey House seat with Rebecca Bennet, an ex-Navy helicopter pilot, defeating two-term Republican Tom Kean Jr. The seat was bound to be competitive this year, considering it changed hands in the two most recent midterm elections.
Another resounding win by the Democrats was secured in Pennsylvania, a known red state, wherein Bob Brooks defeated Republican incumbent Ryan Mackenzie. Brooks leaned on his blue-collar background to connect with voters, with rising living costs being one of the key issues faced by them.
South Carolina and Texas, two more red states, elected Democrats to the Senate after 30 years. Annie Andrews defeated Darline Graham in South Carolina, while James Talarico took the Texas Senate by beating Republican Ken Paxton.
Texas has been a double boost for Democrats, with Gina Hinojosa winning the Governor race dethroning incumbent Greg Abbott. It's the first time the state has elected a Democrat Governor since 1990 and Hinojosa is also the first Latina Governor. Abbott was seeking an unprecedented fourth term after winning the first poll in 2014.
Kansas, a historically red state, has handed the Republicans a shocking upset as Democrat Adam Hamilton flipped the Senate seat. It's the first time in nearly a century that a blue wave has hit the state. A Methodist megachurch pastor, Hamilton defeated Republican Roger Marshall, who was eyeing a second term and had Trump rally for him twice in the state in October.
The Governor election results are also being counted. Indian-origin Republican Vivek Ramaswamy lost the Ohio race to Democrat Amy Acton, proving the ad controversy featuring Acton's birth mother did little damage to her campaign.
Just like Texas, Iowa also elected its first Democratic Governor with Rob Sand defeating Republican Zach Lahn. This is the first time since 2006 that the state has elected a Democratic leader. Trump won the state in the 2024 presidential elections by 13 percentage points.
The Governor race saw many firsts. Keisha Lance Bottoms won the race in Georgia, defeating Rick Jackson and becoming the first black woman to become the head of a US state. Meanwhile, Democrat David Crowley defeated Republican Tom Tiffany to win the race and become the first black Governor in Wisconsin. New Mexico chose Deb Haaland making her the first Native American woman to lead a US state.
Trump accepted the US midterm drubbing, saying he will work with the Democrats for the welfare of the country. However, he added that if he was on the ballot, the Republicans would have won by a landslide.
