Holi, the festival of colours, is all about joy, laughter, and vibrant celebrations. From the splash of gulal to the rhythm of festive beats, it’s a time when energy fills the air. But while the festivities are thrilling, your skin might not share the same excitement. Dry or wet colours can leave your skin and hair feeling rough, sensitive, and dull.
As per a TOI report, dermatologist Dr Aparna Santhanam, Skin Expert at ITC Dermafique, highlights the importance of skincare during Holi. "During Holi, we tend to leave our skin exposed to different chemicals. It is extremely important to protect the skin from colour and sun damage, and a few easy steps will help. Using a sunscreen which protects from the harmful effects of the full sun spectrum, visible light, infrared (IR), UVA, and UVB, becomes essential. I would advise a sun care routine before you begin your celebrations, ensuring that your product targets the 360° sun spectrum to protect your skin. Using a light moisturiser on the body will also help protect the skin, and removal of colour post-festivities becomes easier. Post the celebrations, remember to use a gentle cleanser for the face, followed by a hyaluronic acid-based toner for gentle pore cleansing, and finish it off with a suitable moisturiser for best hydration."

Pre-Holi Prep: Building a Shield
Hydration is key
Your skin’s best defence starts from within. Drink plenty of water in the days leading up to Holi and include hydrating fruits and vegetables in your diet. Well-hydrated skin is less likely to absorb colours.
Sunscreen is a must
Before stepping out, apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen to shield your skin from the sun. It will not only protect you from UV rays but also make it easier to wash off the colours later.
Post-Holi Pampering: Soothing and Restoring
Gentle cleansing
Resist the urge to scrub your skin aggressively. Instead, wipe your face with a light moisturiser first, then use a mild cleanser with lukewarm water to wash off the colours. Pat your skin dry with a soft towel.
Moisturise and soothe
After cleansing, nourish your skin with a calming moisturiser to restore its balance. Your skin needs hydration after exposure to colours and sunlight.
Exfoliate with caution
Avoid scrubbing your skin immediately after Holi, as it can be extra sensitive. Give it a few days before using any exfoliating products.
Keep hydrating
Continue drinking plenty of water to flush out toxins and maintain your skin’s natural glow. Follow up with a hydrating face cream and body serum for added nourishment.
