Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya praised India for finishing fourth at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, describing the performance as “commendable” despite a reduced number of sports. Team India increased its medal count from 30 at the comparable disciplines in Birmingham 2022 to 39 in Glasgow this year.
Posting on X, Mandaviya said, “Bharat signs off from the Commonwealth Games 2026 with a commendable 4th-place finish. Despite Glasgow 2026 being a trimmed-down edition without several disciplines where India traditionally excels, Team India improved from 30 medals in the comparable disciplines at Birmingham 2022 to 39 medals this year.”
The Sports Minister attributed this success to the growing depth and strength of Indian sport under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership. He added, “Proud of every athlete, coach and support staff who gave their all for the Tricolour.”
Mandaviya also affirmed India’s commitment to delivering a memorable Commonwealth Games when the country hosts its centenary edition in 2030. “As India prepares to host the Centenary Commonwealth Games 2030, we are committed to delivering one of the greatest editions in the history of the Games,” he stated.
The 2026 Games concluded after 11 days of competition, with Scotland formally transferring the Commonwealth Games flag and ceremonial baton to India during the closing ceremony. Olympic gold medallist Neeraj Chopra, Indian Olympic Association president PT Usha, and Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi received the flag and baton as part of the official handover.
India will host the Games in Ahmedabad, becoming the second nation after Australia to stage the multi-sport event more than once. India previously hosted the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi in 2010.
On the sporting front, India secured 39 medals overall – 13 gold, 17 silver, and nine bronze – maintaining its fourth-place finish on the medals table. Although the total was lower than the 61 medals won in Birmingham in 2022, this figure was achieved with a smaller delegation of 122 athletes compared to 210 previously, and in a Games where some traditionally strong Indian disciplines were excluded. A total of 38 athletes returned with medals. Long-distance runner Gulveer Singh was the only Indian to win two medals.
With the ceremonial handover complete, focus now turns to Ahmedabad as preparations begin for the 2030 Commonwealth Games.
