Three days after escaping from the high-security Central Jail here, two inmates facing trial in separate POCSO cases were successfully apprehended in Rajasthan by Srinagar police on Wednesday, an official said.
Farman Khan of Rajasthan’s Sadanpora area and Mukhtar Ahmed Gujar of Sanglan Chittergul in South Kashmir’s Anantnag district escaped from Central Jail Srinagar on August 23 after reportedly scaling the front-side wall.
“The duo have been successfully traced and apprehended by Srinagar police with the assistance of Rajasthan Police from the Rajgarh area of Churu district,” the official said.
After completing the necessary formalities, he said, the accused will be brought back to Srinagar for further legal proceedings.
Khan was lodged in Srinagar Central Jail since June 23 in connection with an FIR registered against him under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
Similarly, Gujar was lodged in prison since April 13 in connection with a separate FIR under sections of the BNS and the POCSO Act.
Following their escape from prison, Srinagar police launched a massive manhunt to trace and apprehend the two accused. Police had also issued lookout notices and announced a reward for information leading to their arrest.
