Transport Ministry issues draft notification to bring two-wheeler helmets under compulsory BIS certification

The Ministryof Road Transport and Highways has recently issued a draft notification forbringing Protective Helmets for two-wheelers rider under compulsorycertification as per Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016. Once brought intoeffect, a rider wearing a local helmet on a two-wheeler will have to pay achallan.
This willenable to have only BIS certified helmets for two-wheelers to be manufacturedand sold in India. Accordingly, companies manufacturing local helmets wouldalso land in jail along with a fine.
It will alsoimprove the quality of two-wheeler helmets and would improve road safetyscenario, and further would be helpful in reducing fatal injuries involvingtwo-wheelers.The Transport Ministry has also invited suggestions and commentsfrom the general public and the stakeholders in this regard.
Suggestionsand comments can be sent to the Joint Secretary (MVL), Ministry of RoadTransport and Highways, Transport Bhavan, and Parliament Street within thirtydays from the date of notification.
