More than 200 people are dead in a series of coordinated blasts which shook the cities of Colombo, Negombo and Batticaloa. The places which were targeted during the blasts are Five Star luxury hotels and popular churches which include Shangri La hotel, Cinnamon Grand Hotel, KingsBury and St Anthonys Church in Colombo, St Sabastian Church in Negombo, Zion church in Batticoloa and Tropical Inn hotel in Dehiwala. Thirty Five foreigners are believed to be among those who died during the blasts, St Anthonys church was one of the three Churches which were attacked is famous among the tourists as well the locals.
Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said that he strongly condemns the attacks which took place in Sri Lanka and assured to take stern action against those who are responsible for these attacks. These are the worst attack on Srilanka since the end of LTTE terror 10 years back.
Thirteen suspects have been arrested who were believed to be behind these attacks, a blast in the suburbs where Police had gone on a tipoff led to these arrests after a pursuit of the suspects. However since no group has accepted the responsibility of the attack, the motive behind the attacks is still not clear. The security has been beefed up in Goa and other parts of India in anticipation of such attacks in India.
The Prime Minister of SriLanka held an emergency meeting with the country's top military officials and called an emergency meeting of the parliament on Monday. Local Christian groups said that they have faced increasing intimidation from Buddhist monks in the recent years. According to the eye witnesses it is believed that atleast 2 blasts were carried by the suicide bombers.
Curfew Imposed
Nationwide curfew has been imposed in Srilanka following these attacks, and also the major social networking sites such as Facebook, Whatsapp were blocked so as to prevent misinformation and rumours in the country. The attacks were well coordinated and were planned on a very large scale so it detailed and impartial investigation shall be required to catch the real culprits behind the devastating attack.
