Union minister Kiren Rijiju was on Thursday shifted from the law ministry and assigned Ministry of Earth Sciences. Rijiju has been replaced by minister Arjun Ram Meghwal.

A press release from the Rashtrapati Bhavan stated, “Shri Arjun Ram Meghwal, Minister of State be assigned the independent charge as Minister of State in the Ministry of Law and Justice in addition to his existing portfolios, in place of Shri Kiren Rijiju.”

Earlier, Rijiju’s remark about “some retired judges” being “part of the anti-India gang” received flak from various Opposition leaders, who took the minister to task for “talking like an outlaw” and “propagating injustice”.

In January, Rijiju had written a letter to the Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud, “suggesting” the inclusion of a government nominee in the decision-making process for shortlisting of judge. This came amid a tussle between the Supreme Court and the Centre over the delay in appointment of judges.

Rijiju took charge of the law ministry in July 2021. A three-time Lok Sabha MP from Arunachal Pradesh, Rijiju is a law graduate from Delhi University’s Campus Law Centre. His promotion to a Cabinet rank from being a junior minister with Independent charge for Youth Affairs and Sports had come as a surprise for many in the government.
