National Conference Additional General Secretary and former Minister Mr Ajay Kumar Sadhotra today greeted the people on the auspicious occasion of Mahashivratri, celebrated by Kashmiri Pandits as Herath, and expressed the hope that the festival would be observed in the true spirit of Jammu and Kashmir’s composite culture and age-old tradition of
communal harmony.
In his message, Mr Sadhotra said Mahashivratri symbolises faith, spiritual awakening and the triumph of righteousness, values that have historically bound the diverse communities of the region together. He said the festival is a reminder of the civilisational ethos of harmony and coexistence that has defined Jammu and Kashmir for centuries.
Extending special greetings to Kashmiri Pandits in Jammu region as also across the country and abroad, Mr Sadhotra prayed for peace, prosperity and wellbeing of all. He said Mahashivratri, or Herath, holds deep cultural andspiritual significance for Kashmiri Pandits, reflecting their rich heritage and unbroken civilisational link with the Valley.
Mr Sadhotra wished safe and dignified return of Kashmiri Pandits to the Valley, saying Kashmir remains incomplete without the presence of its indigenous Pandit community. He hoped that the government will redouble efforts and work with sincerity and sensitivity to create an atmosphere of confidence, security and dignity so that displaced families can rehabilitate once again on the land of their ancestors.
“Kashmiri Pandits are an integral part of the social, cultural and spiritual fabric of Jammu and Kashmir. Their return is not merely an administrative exercise but a moral and historical responsibility,” he said, adding that reconciliation
and restoration of trust were essential for lasting peace. Highlighting the broader significance of Mahashivratri, Mr Sadhotra said the
festival inspires self-reflection, restraint and devotion, and calls upon humanity to rise above divisions and intolerance.
Mr Sadhotra prayed that Lord Shiva bless humanity with wisdom, harmony and resilience, and guide society towards peace and mutual respect. He expressed hope that Mahashivratri would strengthen bonds of brotherhood and reinforce the composite cultural spirit of Jammu and Kashmir, which he said remains its greatest strength
