The India Meteorological Department (IMD), Srinagar, has issued a weather advisory warning of two Western Disturbances likely to affect Jammu and Kashmir and adjoining areas in quick succession between January 22 and January 28, 2026.
According to the advisory communicated to Divisional Commissioner Jaamu and Kashmir by the Meteorological Centre, Srinagar as per news agency , the first Western Disturbance, expected to impact the region from January 22 to January 24 with peak activity on January 23, is likely to be intense. The second system is forecast to affect the region from the night of January 26 to the forenoon of January 28, with peak activity on January 27, and is expected to be of moderate intensity.
Under the influence of these systems, widespread light to moderate rainfall and snowfall is expected across the Union Territory, with heavy rainfall and snowfall at isolated places. The first system is likely to bring heavy precipitation over the Pir Panjal range, including the Chenab Valley in Jammu division, and middle to higher reaches of south Kashmir, including Anantnag, Pahalgam, Kulgam, Shopian, Pir Ki Gali, Gulmarg, Sonamarg-Zojila axis, Bandipora-Razdan Pass, Kupwara-Sadhna Pass, and districts of Doda, Udhampur, Reasi, Kishtwar and Ramban.
The second Western Disturbance is also expected to cause moderate to heavy rainfall and snowfall over similar regions, particularly over the Pir Panjal range, Chenab Valley and middle to higher reaches of south Kashmir.
IMD has cautioned that the weather activity may disrupt surface and air transportation, including the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway and other major roads in higher reaches. Travelers, tourists and transporters have been advised to plan their movements accordingly.
People living in snow-bound areas have been urged to avoid venturing into avalanche-prone and sloppy areas. Farmers have been advised to suspend irrigation, fertilizer application and chemical spraying during the forecast period. The advisory also warns of possible landslides, mudslides and gusty winds with speeds of 40 to 60 kmph at vulnerable locations.
The advisory has been issued for the information of concerned authorities to take necessary precautionary measures. (KNC)
