Senior IPS officer Rajesh Kumar of the 1995 batch of the erstwhile Jammu and Kashmir cadre (now AGMUT) has been given premature repatriation to his parent cadre by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC).
Kumar, who was serving as Special Director General in the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), will return to the AGMUT cadre with immediate effect. He had been on central deputation to the CRPF since March 2018, when he joined as Inspector General. He was later elevated to Additional Director General and, in early September 2026, promoted to the rank of Special DG (Level-16) on an in-situ basis for a tenure of two years or until further orders, whichever was earlier.
The premature repatriation comes shortly after his recent elevation and ends a long central deputation stint. Kumar belongs to the 1995 batch of the erstwhile J&K cadre, which was merged into the AGMUT cadre following the reorganisation of Jammu and Kashmir. Official records list his date of appointment to the IPS as September 3, 1995.
During his service in Jammu and Kashmir, Kumar held several sensitive and operationally important assignments. These included DIG North Kashmir Range (Baramulla), IGP Jammu Zone (appointed in March 2013), IG Special Security Group (SSG), and IG CRPF (Operations), Kashmir. His J&K experience covered key phases of counter-insurgency and law-and-order management in both the Kashmir and Jammu regions.Kumar’s return to the parent cadre is expected to strengthen the senior leadership pool available for deployment across AGMUT territories, including Jammu and Kashmir, Delhi, Arunachal Pradesh, Goa, Mizoram and other Union Territories. The Ministry of Home Affairs is likely to issue further orders regarding his specific assignment in due course.
